LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A local organization is inviting the community to celebrate the arrival of spring and an international partnership at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Lima.

The Lima Sister Cities Association will host the event to honor its longstanding relationship with Harima-cho, Japan. The sister city connection began in 1995 when both communities passed resolutions to formalize the partnership.

Cherry Blossom Festival returns with culture, music and community spirit

As part of that relationship, Harima-cho gifted nine Japanese cherry trees, which were planted along the Ottawa River in downtown Lima. The trees have since become a symbol of cultural exchange and friendship between the two communities.

Festival organizers say the event will feature live performances of traditional and contemporary Japanese music, Japanese snacks, a kimono vendor and other activities designed to highlight the shared cultural connection.

Matt Neeley, president of the Lima Sister Cities Association, said the festival helps bring awareness to the program while fostering community involvement.

“Through our organization, we help change lives of students and adults by learning new cultures and expanding their understanding of the world,” Neeley said.

The Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the park located at 202 E. Eureka St. in Lima.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers for a cleanup day ahead of the event, set for Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m., to prepare the park for the celebration.
