LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lima city officials say a local program aimed at reducing the number of unwanted pets is continuing to make a difference, as another round of assistance becomes available for residents.

The Spay Neuter Assistance Program, known as SNAP, was launched in 2023 and provides vouchers to help cover the cost of spaying and neutering cats and dogs. The city allocates $10,000 annually for the program, offering $150 vouchers for dogs and $75 vouchers for cats.

Officials say demand for the program remains strong.

Ric Stolly, deputy public works director, says all available vouchers have been used each year since the program began.

“We do know is that every voucher that's available for the last three years has been used, and we're very pleased to help you know, make that event happen. It's great, great way to partner with the county, as they do the canines and then the felines with the with the city of Lima Parks and Recreation."

City of Lima continues spay and neuter assistance for pet owners

Officials say demand for the program remains strong.

The program is a partnership between the city, the county and local agencies working to address pet overpopulation and improve public safety.

Julie Shellhammer, Allen County dog warden, says spaying and neutering pets has clear benefits.

“Having the dogs neutered helps considerably, keeping the pet healthy and cutting down on the running at large and the dog bites.”

To date, the SNAP program has issued 221 vouchers.

Dog vouchers are available through the Allen County Dog Warden’s Office, and dogs must be licensed or become licensed to qualify. Cat vouchers can be obtained through the City of Lima’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department at the city garage on Collett Street.

Officials note that vouchers are limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
