DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) — The Delphos Public Library is expanding its services by giving residents a new place to explore creativity and hands-on learning.
Thanks to a federal grant and funding from the Arnold C. Dienstberger Foundation, the library converted the 1912 portion of its building into Create Space, a new makerspace featuring technology and equipment for community use.
The new space includes 3D printers, an engraver, sewing machines and podcasting equipment. For children, Create Space also offers hands-on learning opportunities through activities such as robotics.
Library officials say the makerspace expands what the library has to offer while continuing its mission of serving the Delphos community.
“I think it really furthers our mission of not only being about books and literacy, but also being a community hub. So, we're creating a place where maybe if someone can't afford to have these things in their home, they can come to the library and do it at a very affordable cost like of just 5 cents per filament or completely free depending on what they're doing. So, it kind of helps us get into the community a little more and provide some extra services that maybe people wouldn't think of. Like we made some really cool signs for this up here and like a small business could do that or a sign at a farmer's market booth. Things that people could come and make affordably rather than having to maybe export the need for that and spend a lot of money,” says Rachel Strahm, Youth Service Librarian.
Beginning the week of July 27, Create Space will be open Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m.
