LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The rising cost of healthcare on the mind of a gubernatorial candidate making a stop in Lima on Friday.

Democrat Amy Acton speaking with area labor leaders and residents, saying we're in a healthcare crisis in Ohio. She noted that a quarter of Ohioans rely on Medicaid, with 40 percent of the state's kids born into it. Acton says her potential republican opponent in November, Vivek Ramaswamy, has made it clear he's no fan of healthcare safety nets in the Buckeye State, calling him out of touch and a danger.

"We are dealing with an opponent who thinks Medicaid and Medicare, and quite frankly, has said Social Security as well are mistakes," said Acton. "He has said they need dismantled. This is a very big concern, not just here in Lima, but everywhere."

She added that all Ohioans are just one medical crisis away from financial ruin, and that it's the number one cause of bankruptcy in the state. But she says her team has a proven way to reduce billions of dollars in medical debt for residents. A bipartisan bill on medical debt has been introduced in Ohio, and other states have been able to remove a billion dollars in debt for $10 million.

Acton says her healthcare proposal would also include an RX-Ohio plan, tax credits, and a big focus on rooting out corruption in Columbus.
