LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Local middle school students are learning about the importance of healthy life choices they can make.

As part of Positive Addiction Week, seventh- and eighth-grade students in Lima’s Catholic schools attended various workshops to learn about both the positive and negative sides of addiction.

Students were introduced to activities such as pickleball, tennis and e-sports as healthy outlets they can become involved in. They also learned about mental health awareness and the dangers of smoking and vaping.

School officials said the goal is to help students understand how the choices they make now can affect the rest of their lives.

“There's so many negative things that kids get addicted to, so we just really, really focus on, instead of harping on what they shouldn't do, we rather be example and show them what they can do. And that's what kind of like this day is. It's showing you, oh, I've never tried tennis before. Well now you now you might found a new sport or a hobby, you know, or, Oh, I never thought about life through the perspective of what nicotine could do to me, personally. Well, now you got a class, a little mini session with a actual lung specialist who's telling you the effects and showing you the effects,” said Anthony Wilkerson, dean of students at St. Charles Catholic School.

Positive Addiction Week will conclude Friday with the annual run involving students from Lima Catholic Schools.
