LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — It was the catch of the day at Faurot Park Thursday morning as students from Lima City Schools spent the day learning how to fish.
The City of Lima’s Department of Parks and Recreation teamed up with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to teach students the basics of fishing through a hands-on educational program.
Fishing Day Coordinator Randy Kohli, who has led the program for many years, said seeing the children’s excitement throughout the event makes the effort worthwhile.
“To see them catch their first fish that some of them ever caught, to see the kids just react. They enjoy being in the boat. They talk about it. There's a four week program that we put on where we're at the school doing classes and learning how to tie knots, learning how to put fish, learning how to cast these kids just love putting all that together,” said Kohli.
As part of the experience, students also had the opportunity to ride around the pond in a small aluminum boat. Organizers said the smiles and reactions from the children reflected just how much they enjoyed their day at the park.
