LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The annual Kentucky Derby celebration is serving as more than just a race-day gathering in Lima, doubling as a key fundraiser for a local service organization.

Known nationally as the “Run for the Roses” and the first race of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, the Kentucky Derby has inspired a local tradition called Hats, Heels, and Horses. Hosted by Altrusa International of Lima, the event has become one of the group’s signature fundraisers.

The evening event features food, fellowship and horse racing, while supporting the organization’s broader mission. Altrusa International focuses on literacy, education and leadership development, along with other community needs.

“The fundraising aspect goes for a variety of different things in which we're helping with the community, from a literacy standpoint, our volunteerism as well as our scholarships. So scholarships are big for this particular organization,” says Dr. Lisa Bradley-Glenn, Altrusa International of Lima

The Kentucky Derby Fundraiser will take place May 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the American Legion Post 96. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased by calling 419-371-6849. Proceeds will benefit Altrusa’s scholarship program and community service projects.
