LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The decision to delay or cancel school during severe weather rests with the superintendent, and it is one taken seriously.

Lima City Schools Superintendent Andre Rudolph was on the roads as early as 2 a.m. Thursday to assess conditions following snow and ice overnight. During winter weather events, his responsibility is to ensure roads are safe for students and school bus drivers.

Rudolph said decisions on delays or cancellations are based on several factors, including temperatures, wind chill, snowfall and ice.

“I wanted to be confident that our busses could get around town safely, and with the freezing rain that came first and then the snow on top of it, I just wasn't confident that we'd be able to get around safely, and so made the decision to cancel school today,” Rudolph said.

With a large number of students who walk to school, winter temperatures are always a concern for the district. Rudolph encouraged parents to make sure children are dressed appropriately for cold weather when heading to school.

“Definitely bundle up. I've put it on our social media platforms. We sent it home to parents, but bundle up if you need any support in that, many of our schools have additional coats. We have hats and scarves and so just say something,” he said.

Forecasters predict temperatures will remain well below freezing throughout the upcoming week.
