LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol are prepared for an active Fourth of July weekend, and are reminding those who plan on traveling over the holiday to stay alert on the roads.

Traffic is expected to increase over the weekend, and drivers are encouraged to stay alert while behind the wheel.

Patrol officers said that they've seen the amount of incidents with drivers running stop signs, speeding, and being distracted increase significantly over past Fourth of July weekends.

Drivers are reminded that paying attention and staying safe is the law, not a recommendation, and patrol officers will be out over the weekend monitoring roads.

Ohio State Highway Patrol prepares for active Fourth of July traffic

Traffic is expected to increase over the weekend, and drivers are encouraged to stay alert while behind the wheel.

"Don't drive distracted. When you're driving, make sure you're looking at the roadway. And then also wear a seat belt and don't be speeding. We're going to have a lot of us out there and we are going to be enforcing traffic laws. So our goal is to get everyone to where they're going safely. So just slow down and follow those laws," said Lieutenant Nicholas Boes, post commander with the Ohio Highway Patrol.

People planning on drinking should plan to have a designated driver and to go out in groups.

The state patrol says these laws are to make sure everyone traveling gets home safely, and that people should stay safe and have fun over the holiday.
