LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The City of Lima is continuing its efforts to revitalize neighborhoods by removing abandoned and unsafe homes that have stood vacant for years.
City officials are using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to demolish structures that are no longer safe or livable. The initiative is part of the city's broader neighborhood revitalization efforts aimed at improving safety, eliminating blight and creating opportunities for future development.
Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith said removing unsafe buildings helps pave the way for new possibilities.
"Every unsafe structure we remove creates an opportunity for something better," Smith said.
Once a structure is demolished, property owners have several options for the land, including participating in redevelopment programs or selling the property to someone interested in building a new home.
"Once the structures are removed, the owner has the option to utilize that program or they also have the option to sell those properties to somebody that wants to develop it into a usable home lot," said Doug Ditto, building administrator for the Lima-Allen County Building Department.

City officials say four additional structures have already been approved for demolition in the coming months.
The Community Development Block Grant program is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and supports projects that improve neighborhoods and expand redevelopment opportunities.
