LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Halloween can be a scary and overwhelming time, especially for children with autism. That’s why around 200 families attended the 5th annual Sensory Friendly Trick or Treat hosted by the Autism Life Center.

Sensory-Friendly Trick or Treat brings Halloween fun to Lima families

This was the first year the event was held indoors, giving children the chance to collect items from local organizations and businesses. Kids also enjoyed decorating pumpkins, making bracelets, and coloring pictures. Heroes for Hope brought costumed characters to interact with the children, while Woof Boom Radio provided music throughout the event. Organizers say the goal was to create a positive and inclusive experience for families.

“We try and keep their needs in mind. We have choice boards up front so that if it's overwhelming and too much, they can look at the choice board and choose what they want to do and just kind of create a timeline for them. Here routine, we have non edible treats and things for them so we don't have to worry about food diets. Parents don't have to go home and take things out of their bag. They get to keep them all. We have things like monkey noodles. We have pop its we have all different kinds of activities and crafts and stuff that we fill their bags with,” says Tara Viola, the Autism Life Center.
