LIMA, Ohio (AP) — Students at St. Charles School are making a difference in the community during the Lenten season by supporting a local nonprofit.

The school presented Heartbeat of Lima with a little over $1,700 collected through almsgiving efforts during Lent. The organization provides diapers and other essential items to women and men who are expecting a baby or have a young child at home.

Students say the effort reflects their commitment to helping others in need.

“I think it's awesome, because we can help families in need. And I know there's a lot of people in need right now. I think our schools, since we're a Catholic community, we are out to help others. It shows that we really care,” says Easton Swinehart, 8th grade, St. Charles School.

School leaders say the initiative is about more than just raising money.

“We hope that students take away from this is learning about a servant's heart. We always want to help those that are in need. We want to make sure that our students are learning that by supporting community, we just make each other stronger, and showing our Christ like values,” says Megan Scheid, Principal, St. Charles School.

St. Charles School selects a different organization to support each year. In the past, students have donated to groups such as the Christian Corner Community Center and Family Promise.
