LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio State University Lima is helping students gain a competitive edge in the workforce through hands-on learning opportunities and career preparation resources.

The university’s Office of Career Development and Engagement recently marked Ohio Intern and Co-op Appreciation Day by highlighting the importance of real-world experience. The event aimed to encourage students to pursue internships while offering practical tools for career readiness.

Michael Frueh, a computer science and engineering major at Ohio State Lima, is currently interning with Perry ProTech, where he works with computer systems to improve automation processes. He said the experience allows him to directly apply concepts learned in the classroom.

“I can use those skills I learned in that class to understand the systems that I'm looking at in my internship,” Frueh said. “Instead of just learning it in a classroom and maybe forgetting it, I actually apply those skills and understand what's going on in a real-world environment.”

Career Development Manager Rachel Richardson said internships have expanded significantly over the past decade, particularly paid opportunities, as employers look to build a pipeline of future talent.

“Employers really utilize it as an excellent way to develop their talent pipeline,” Richardson said. “They invite students into their environment and work culture, allowing them to evaluate potential full-time employees. It’s mutually beneficial.”

In addition to professional development services, Ohio State Lima also offers free professional clothing to help students prepare for internships and future employment. Community members can donate business attire or medical scrubs by contacting the university’s Office of Career Development and Engagement.
