LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As this bitter cold spell settles in, with more frigid air on the way, heating systems across the region are working overtime. HVAC experts say extreme cold puts added strain on furnaces, making this one of the most common times of year for service calls.

While a small drop in indoor temperature is normal during subzero weather, homeowners are urged to avoid panic and contact a qualified professional if their heating system is not keeping up.

“The best thing is just making sure it’s clean. Make sure you got new filters into it. Make sure your registers are open. Make sure you’re not covering them, because it’s often covered from Christmas time. You know, people trees up and move furniture. Just make sure everything’s open up so it can breathe really well, so the air can get moving through the house,” said Randy Waller, HVAC division head, University of Northwestern Ohio.

Waller says keeping an eye on your heating unit and doing yearly inspections can make sure your house stays warm all winter long.
