Children explore nature through play at Hermon Woodlands Metro Park

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A handful of children and their families braved the summer heat Tuesday morning to learn more about nature during the Imaginature Playgroup at Hermon Woodlands Metro Park.

The program combines hands-on nature education with imaginative outdoor play, giving young children an opportunity to explore the natural world while building confidence outside.

During the program, participants learned about a box turtle named "Marshmallow," a resident of the McElroy Environmental Center. After the lesson, the children headed outdoors to play, explore and use their imaginations, with one child creating a fairy garden for a woodland friend.

"This is a really fun program that blends nature education and also giving kids the confidence to get outside and the skills that they need to be safe outside," said Marie Walton, naturalist with the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.

Hermon Woodlands, located at 485 N. Wapak Road, offers a variety of family-friendly programs and outdoor activities throughout the year.
