LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima residents learned more about how they can help the city identify and address brownfield properties.
City officials and environmental contractors explained at a community meeting Thursday night how the half-million-dollar brownfield grant awarded to Lima by the EPA will be used to improve the area. A brownfield site is a property that could be contaminated by hazardous or polluting materials left behind from its previous use, like former laundry mats or gas stations. With this funding and residents' help, the city will create a list of these locations and determine what, if any, rehabilitation is needed to restore them to a safe and usable state.
"So, there is a form available on limaohio.gov. It is on the Workforce and Small Business Development page or Housing and Neighborhoods and Economic Development with the brownfield. You can complete that application and then submit it online; you can return it to 50 Town Square," explained Amber Martin, the city's Workforce and Small Business Development coordinator.
Anyone who knows of a possible contaminated property within city limits, even if they are not the owner, is encouraged to fill out an application.
