Delphos Safety City partners with local police department

DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) — School may be out for kids in Delphos, but the local police department is giving kids the opportunity to learn important life skills through the Delphos Safety City summer program.

Through the Safety City program, kids in Delphos can learn about different kinds of safety, including road, electrical, public, and what to do when they are approached by strangers.

In their session today, kids were shown around the Delphos police department and fire department. From there, they were given lessons on fire safety and how firefighters work.

The program is funded by donations from local businesses and is free for all children ages 5 to 9.

"Just because they're out of the school, they don't get to see me, doesn't mean I'm not there," says Student Resource Officer Robert Fitzgerald. "I get to see them during the summer driving around or if they come to safety city. We cover a lot of various topics. We do some self defense stuff with stranger danger, cause sometimes strangers don't always take no so we teach the kids a little bit on how to overcome that and build some of the confidence."

Fitzgerald said he would like to continue hosting safety city in Delphos every year while providing more free resources to kids in the community.
