Justice Kennedy spoke at Friday's Republican Luncheon about her office's efforts to improve Ohio's legal system. She's currently in the second year of her three-year plan to reduce both civil and criminal case backlogs by offering free services to local courts and surveying judges to find the root cause.

Her first task force in office, which focuses on reducing criminal recidivism, is also about to release the results of a study that will give insight into how courts and communities can support those who are getting out of jail and looking to start new, law-abiding lives.

"It really stems from an encounter I had as a young police officer in the city of Hamilton. It was a cold, snowy, icy night, and there was a break-in at a tire store. As I went into the structure, there was a young man sitting there, doing nothing—not ransacking anything, just sitting. And I asked him what he was doing, and he said, 'I've been waiting for you.' He was just released from prison. He had nowhere to go, and to him, committing another crime to go back to prison, that was a better living solution for him than to be on the street," said Sharon Kennedy, Ohio Supreme Court Justice.

The Allen County Republican Party also congratulated Keith Cheney on his 30th anniversary as the local chairman.
