Kia, Hyundai owners may qualify for free Anti-Theft Systems or compensation

(WLIO) — Owners of certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles may be eligible for a free anti-theft system or compensation following a legal settlement with the automakers.

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, owners of specific Kia and Hyundai models could qualify for a free anti-theft system. Eligible Ohio vehicle owners will be notified directly by Kia or Hyundai and will have one year to have the system installed.

Drivers who are seeking compensation for repair costs related to a vehicle theft or attempted theft can contact their car manufacturer online. Links to determine vehicle eligibility can be found below.

The settlement stems from a multistate lawsuit filed after thieves shared videos on social media demonstrating how to steal certain Kia and Hyundai models, particularly those manufactured between 2011 and 2022.

In addition, a separate lawsuit has been filed by the cities of Columbus, Cleveland and Parma, seeking reimbursement for police resources used to investigate Kia and Hyundai thefts.
