"I think one of the main reasons to be a part of it is to show the kids encouragement. You know a lot of kids are nervous on the first day. Also the parents as well. Some are very, very emotional. You just want to welcome the kids into the school building. Into a brand new school year and show them that they have a family setting and a lot of support from around the school," said Ryan Montgomery, whose daughter attends Unity Elementary School.
"It's just a way to tell the kids we all support them. We believe in them, and they're going to do great things. Every first day is the best day ever, and it just sets the tone for the year, and it's going to be a great year," commented Tricia Winkler, principal at Unity Elementary School.
More than 3,000 students returned to the classrooms Wednesday at Lima City Schools. The school system employs roughly 600 people and has a teaching staff with a combined teaching experience of more than 4,000 years. Some other facts you may not know are that Lima City Schools has 16 athletic teams, 25 performance groups, and more than 20 ways for students to earn college credits.
