LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A group of Lima athletes is preparing to represent the city on the national stage at the AAU Junior Olympics in Iowa.
The coaching staff of the Y2K Panthers, formerly known as the Striders, introduced the athletes who qualified for the national track and field introduce athletes during Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith's weekly briefing. The competitors have already earned numerous medals during qualifying events leading up to the national championships and are now preparing to compete against some of the nation's top young athletes. Carter Thompson, who will compete in the high jump, long jump and hurdles, said the support of the coaching staff has helped him reach his potential.
"The coaches just push you and that's just one thing I'm really grateful for, that all the coaches just like believe in you and they push you to your absolute best, which just leads to greatness."
Kayla Jennings, who will compete in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, turbo javelin and triathlon, said experience and perseverance have helped her continue to qualify for the national meet.
"Ever since I was 8, I've been going to nationals. So for some people it's really hard to go back-to-back, but I learned how to put in the work and keep going when it's hard."
Coach Rod Simpson said the athletes have dedicated much of their summer to preparing for the competition.
"These kids sacrificed their summer free time. They showed up Monday through Thursday every day at practice. Ready to work hard, and they just, they want to represent their city."
The Y2K Panthers are seeking financial support to help offset travel and competition expenses for the weeklong AAU Junior Olympics. Donations can be made through the Lima Community Foundation on behalf of the team.
