LIMA, OH (WLIO) - For 19 years, the Literacy Council has hit a triple-word score with its annual Scrabble fundraiser.

The council is raising money to fund the Lima Adult Learning Center, which continues to serve adults who struggle with literacy.
A record 15 teams competed this year, aiming to rack up the highest score by forming as many words as possible with the letters they were given. In addition to the word-building fun, the Altrusa group provided food, and attendees had the chance to win raffle prizes and bid on auction items. "When I started over 20 years ago, I was hoping we wouldn't be doing this 20 years later. I was hoping that the literacy, adult literacy issue would be under control or maintained, and it's not," said Ken Blanchard of the Literacy Council. "Unfortunately, numbers out last week across the country, fourth and eighth-grade literacy levels are at their lowest levels in 30 years, and a lot of that I attribute to adults in the family that have trouble reading or don't have an appreciation of reading. That's why we're still doing this."
