LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As Independence Day approaches, the Lima Police Department is reminding residents to follow Ohio's fireworks laws and celebrate the holiday safely.
Under the Ohio Revised Code, consumer-grade fireworks may be discharged on July 3, 4 and 5 between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. Fireworks must be used on private property and must meet required safety distances, with aerial fireworks launched at least 150 feet from spectators and non-aerial fireworks set off at least 50 feet away. Lt. Ben Thompson said setting off fireworks in public areas or roadways is prohibited.
"Setting off in the middle of the streets is not legal. We can't set them off in the middle streets, cause traffic delays, and cause property damage to people. Fireworks have to be set off on private property. You cannot go to public property to a park and set off your own fireworks display," Thompson said.
The Lima Police Department is also asking residents to be considerate of their neighbors while celebrating. Officers say they will respond to complaints involving illegal or unsafe fireworks use.
Residents looking for a professional fireworks show can find a list of regional Independence Day displays on the WLIO website.
