Marine Corps League Det. #1063 celebrates birth of Marine Corps

The 11th of November is for all veterans, but November 10th is for the marines.

The Marine Corps League Detachment #1063 celebrate the 243rd birthday of the Marines at Westgate Entertainment Center.

The event gives marines in the area a chance to get together and celebrate the long history of their military branch. The local organization chooses to have a party instead of a more formal event so that people can relax and enjoy themselves.

"We're the only military group that does it," said Det. #1063 Commandant Thomas Martin. "This is a birthday party. Detroit, Fort Wayne, some of the bigger cities, they have a Marine Corps ball but we just have a party so that people are more comfortable with themselves."

The youngest marine there was Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin, 55, and the oldest was John Ackerman, 88.
