MIDDLE POINT, Ohio (WLIO) — Lincolnview's Chayse Overholt excels in anything he does.
The reigning NWC Baseball Player of the Year thrives on the diamond, the links and the court. Off the field, he's just as strong in the classroom with a 3.95 GPA.
"Just his competitive nature. He's always trying to do the best he can and compete, and that's in every sport he does and really in everything he does in life. It's just fun to coach a kid like that," said Lincolnview golf and boys basketball head coach Brett Hammons.
Lincolnview's Chayse Overholt is an All-NWC performer in baseball, basketball and golf. Taking part in each sport has made the Lancer senior a well-rounded athlete.
"I feel like that brings out the best of me on the athletic side because I've been able to grow as a player as well as develop like leadership wise and also competitiveness," said Overholt.
"I just think it's a mental grind. When you're on the golf course and it's shot by shot or when you're on the mound and you're pitching and it's pitch by pitch and even in basketball with possession by possession, it's a lot of mental work going on that and it can be tough and be wearing you down and you know I think he holds up pretty well and you know executing no matter what he does," said Coach Hammons.
Chayse will continue his baseball career at Ohio Northern University.
"One, my dad went there as well as Chayten. So, following in their footsteps, but they also have a really good education as well as leadership on the baseball field from Gene Stechschulte. I'd say Coach Fishpaw done a very good job preparing us and growing us into better leaders. So that will really help in college," said Overholt.
In the classroom, Chayse is ranked sixth in his grade with a 3.95 GPA.
"I think it shows that student athletes absolutely can stand up to high standards and can expect to be really good students and also perform really well on an athletic field. One thing I really love about Chayse as a student is he's a super hard worker, and so I think he sets a really great example for future generations because he's saying you can work hard and get all of this done and still participate," said Lincolnview math teacher Rachel Rohrs.
"I take a lot of pride in my grades, so trying to do my best in everything I do, and it also takes from the footsteps of my brothers," said Overholt.
Chayse Overholt has spent his high school career growing both on and off the field. He credits that growth to the community around him and the opportunities he's been given.
"I want to be remembered as a good leader and role model for others. I'd say it's made me who I am today because of the community and being able to grow as a person leadership-wise and always trying to be my best," said Overholt.
Congratulations to Chayse Overholt — our newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
