New Knoxville high school students were awakened by the harsh reality that even in the bitter cold, accidents still can happen.
Students witnessed a mock car crash between both a drunk driver and a distracted driver out at the Neil Armstrong Airport. This event is known as the "Prom Promise", put on by the New Knoxville-Washington Twp. Fire Department. Even though prom is one of the most exciting moments in a high schooler's life, it is important to understand the consequences of operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and alcohol in addition to driving distracted. Officials say drivers must stay aware in order to stay safe.
“We like to do this every few years to remind the drivers in particular but all the students of the dangers of getting behind the wheel of a vehicle as well as how dangerous it can be to hit someone and how much damage can be done by just the sheer force of a crash," explained Jerry Merges, New Knoxville-Washington Twp. Fire and Rescue Chief.
Many other first responders took part in the simulation including the New Knoxville police and fire departments, the Auglaize County Coroner, life flight, and Miller Funeral Home.
