National Lightning Safety Awareness Week

The National Weather Service is urging everyone to be aware that "when thunder roars, go indoors".

In an annual coordinated effort with the National Weather Service, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness is promoting June 24th through June 30th as National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. We sat down with Allen County Emergency Management Director, Tom Berger, to find out what do before, during, and after storms.

"Then when you're out there, keep an eye on the sky, then make sure you have a plan available for you if you're outside, say at a ball game, know where your closest point of shelter is. If you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning so it's time to call off the event at the first sound of thunder or first sight of lightning that you see," said Tom Berger, Allen County Emergency Management.

Always check the weather forecast before making plans outdoors. And if thunder or lightning storms are happening in your area, listen to current weather reports on local TV stations for the most up to date storm information.
