COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) – Governor Mike DeWine has vetoed a law that would allow Ohio 14- and 15-year-olds to work until 9 p.m. throughout the year.
DeWine rejected the bill this past week and says that it is unwise to let young teenagers work that late during a school night. Currently, Ohio law allows 14- and 15-year-olds to work until 9 p.m. only during the summer months and school holidays. During the school year, they are limited to working until 7 p.m. Lawmakers who introduced the proposal said that employers must get parents' permission first before minors could work until 9 p.m. It would take a three-fifths majority vote in the Ohio General Assembly to overturn DeWine’s veto.
