CONTINENTAL, Ohio (WLIO) - Multiple fire departments battled a residential house fire northeast of Continental along the Putnam and Henry County line Monday evening.
Shortly after 5 p.m., Continental fire crews responded to a two-story home in the 19000 block of Road A. Upon arrival, firefighters found the garage and breezeway fully engulfed in flames. The fire eventually spread into the house.
At the scene, Continental fire officials provided a preliminary cause of the fire and noted several complicating obstacles that crews faced while working to contain the blaze.
"There was a golf cart inside the garage that ignited. We do believe it was a lithium battery golf cart. When I arrived, there were several explosions. We do believe it was propane tanks, acetylene tanks that the homeowner had in the structure," says Chief Dean Williamson, Continental Volunteer Fire Department.
The two homeowners were inside at the time and initially noticed smoke coming from the garage. Fortunately, both residents and their animals were able to escape without injury.
The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist the family.
Fire departments from Miller City, Kalida and Highland Township in Defiance County provided mutual aid.
