Ruby's Road to Recovery

Meet Ruby. She may still appear frail, but she has come a long way since living at the end of chain in a backyard covered in weeds. She was extremely emaciated, flea infested and unable to hide years of abuse.

"Quite frankly she was within hours of death," Ohio SPCA Shelter Director, Elise McCoy, said.

After receiving a cruelty complaint, Ruby and her one surviving puppy were found in extremely poor condition in Scioto County. The Ohio SPCA took over Ruby's care, and on January 5th, she was rushed to MedVet in Columbus to receive around the clock care.

"You can just never quite understand why, you know, why somebody would just put a dog at the end of a leash and stop feeding it," McCoy said.

She was brought to the Ohio SPCA in Lima on Monday to continue to heal physically and emotionally.

"We're really going to have to chip in all of us as volunteers and staff and really give her a lot of attention, so she can become socialized," McCoy said.

They tell us there is still a long recovery ahead. But thanks to those who came to her rescue, she and her puppy have a bright future. And to those who left her there to die..

"What I would say to them? I wouldn't say anything to them with ruby. I'm just going to spend my time with Ruby," McCoy said.
