LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Unity Elementary families rolled up their sleeves tonight for a hands-on cooking experience with Lima Senior’s culinary program.

Unity families filled the Spartan Inn kitchen this evening for the school’s first-ever Family Cooking Night. Parents and students teamed up with Lima Senior’s culinary instructor and students to prepare a homemade meal while learning about kitchen safety and how math and reading skills are used in cooking. Each family left with a children’s cookbook, new cooking utensils and a dinner to take home.

Unity Elementary holds family cooking night

“Because we have three different stations, we have the cooking, we have the food safety, and then we have math in the kitchen. So we wanted to make sure that people are understanding how to save their food at Thanksgiving, because sometimes we forget, oh, we can freeze this or how long we should leave our turkey out, or our ham. So it’s real important during the holidays to make sure we’re safe with our food, but it’s also a great time to spend with your family in the kitchen,” said Tricia Winkler, principal at Unity Elementary School.

Families were also entered into a drawing for a grocery cart full of food — including a turkey for Thanksgiving.
