Friday, one lucky Wapakoneta middle schooler won a chance to spend time with a four-legged police officer.
Rico, the current K-9 unit officer for the Wapakoneta Police Department, has been serving the Wapak community for many years, but the children at the middle school launched a fundraiser to fund the future K-9 officer after Rico retires. The fundraiser began in the first week of October and the total amount of money raised was $1,350 dollars. Part of the assembly included dressing up the superintendent, Aaron Rex, as an enemy and having Rico take him down.
"Mr. Rex just came back to our school. He's been gone for a few years with another school district so we wanted to welcome him back, you know properly, so thought we'll put him in a bite suit and we'll ask him to participate and kinda surprise our teachers and students and he was a great participant and he volunteered and we were just happy to have him help us out," said Kristi Fisher, Wapakoneta Middle School Guidance Counselor.
The middle school winner was Adyson Krause. She will get to spend part of a day with Rico and the police department for actual training events and scenarios.
