LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Several dozen young performers are preparing to take the stage after spending the past week learning the fundamentals of theater during the "Made for the Stage" Summer Camp.
Throughout the week, campers explored character development, script writing, acting, stage design and other aspects of theatrical performance as they worked together to create a variety show. The camp welcomed both first-time participants and returning students looking to continue developing their creative talents. Returning camper Isaac Dye said the camp provides a welcoming environment where he can express his creativity.
"I really like being here. It's fun, the environment's welcoming, and I'm a pretty creative person, but I don't have much outlets to do it, so I like to be here and just write what I'm thinking."
First-time camper Vera Krieg said she gained valuable skills that she hopes will help her pursue more acting opportunities in the future.
"What I've learned this week, I've learned how to direct a play, I've learned how to project my voice when speaking, and I've learned that an ensemble is an important part of a play, not just the leads. And I hope to try out for other plays from learning that, and hopefully I will get in."
The public will have the opportunity to see the campers' work during a free variety show Friday at Encore Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the performance begins at 6:30 p.m. General admission seating will be available. The camp is sponsored by the Lima Salvation Army and supported by Encore Theater and the Hubb this year for camp space.
