The local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is gearing up to celebrate its 30th Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Breakfast. The annual event celebrates the life and legacy of Doctor King by bringing people of all ages together to be inspired to make their community better. This year, Mayor Sharetta Smith will be talking about the occasion, and the featured speaker is Lima native Angela Davis. The money raised from the breakfast helps fund scholarships for students. Last year the sorority handed out 14 thousand dollars in scholarships to help kids start college on a positive note.
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - 12 local high school students received scholarships from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on Saturday.
For the second year in a row, the television program “Hello Lima” partnered with The Sisters in Service Foundation and the local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority to put on a virtual celebration in honor of Dr. King. Pastor John McCants of St. Paul AME church, the oldest black church in Northwest Ohio started the show. He spoke about how significant service was to Dr. King and the importance of teaching his message of equality. He adds it is an ongoing struggle and there are many things that still need to be worked on.
The local Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be held virtually once again. The Sigma Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Sisters in Service Foundation, and Hello Lima are teaming up again this year to present the celebration over the airwaves rather than in person.

This year's theme was "Connecting Lives Through Unity" - a topic that was discussed with the crowd by Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe, one that he hopes those in attendance will be able to take with them.
Every year the Sigma Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha brings the community together to remember the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate his legacy with their memorial breakfast. Chapter president Pauline Pope says that it's a perfect time to remind people what Dr. King spoke about and how we can make use of that in our lives.
