The local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is gearing up to celebrate its 30th Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Breakfast.
The annual event celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. King by bringing people of all ages together to be inspired to make their community better. This year, Mayor Sharetta Smith will be talking about the occasion, and the featured speaker is Lima native Angela Davis.
The money raised from the breakfast helps fund scholarships for students. Last year the sorority handed out $14,000 in scholarships to help kids start college on a positive note.

“We just really want to be able to be able to support the students here and send them off to college with a good start. And knowing that they have support back home, we always let them know that if they have any questions about college, any challenges that they want some assistance with, some guidance with, they are welcome to call us at any time,” says Robin Frazier, president of the Sigma Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
The Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on January 20, 2025, at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center, located at 7 Town Square, Lima, OH 45801.
