Shawnee United Methodist Church is opening its doors Saturday to help families in need this holiday season.
Director Randy Kimpell said the center remains active throughout the day. “We’re open for everybody and anybody, but we’re open from 8:30 to five. You know, even in between the meals, we’re still open. We have a lot of people that come here first thing in the morning and are here till we close it at night.”
Freshman students at Lima Senior High School are making tie blankets to donate to people impacted by the tornado at Indian Lake. The tornado has displaced many residents from their homes leaving them with little to no supplies to support themselves and their families. Lima Senior teacher Eric Tippie--who has spearheaded the effort says students were anxious to help and have been lining up to do their part and help out the Indian Lake community in whatever way they can.
With the forecast calling for unseasonably cold temperatures for at least the next week, the need for warm clothes and food for local homeless shelters is quite high. On Monday, OSU Lima kicked off their annual "Buckeye Soup" drive for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
A local church is giving some warmth and comfort to some local veterans.
