“There have been some legislative changes for the body cameras, which allows us to redact things when you're in your private homes and things like that,” Treglia said. “There is still some work to do. Obviously, when I talk about adversarial conflict, that's still in there, and I'd like to discuss that more with legislators. But right now, they're changing things to the point where I think we can start moving forward. This isn't going to be an overnight process. We're not going to get this done tomorrow. However, we are going to start the process now because of these changes.”

$10 million in grants are available to agencies to purchase body cameras. The Governor says his goal is for every police officer in Ohio to have one. Currently, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office does not equip its deputies with body cameras. Sheriff Matt Treglia says they could provide the money needed for them, but there is something else preventing their use.

According to the Governor's office, the criminal justice and public safety portion of the executive budget aims to increase police transparency by expanding body camera accessibility, reduce crimes and substance abuse, assist local agencies in the recruitment and hiring of new peace officers, and create safe schools. DeWine first discussed programs that were created in the last biennium budget thanks to funding from the Ohio General Assembly. The public safety programs include Recovery Ohio Law Enforcement Fund, Major Drug Interdiction Task Forces, and the Extradition Reimbursement Grant Program.

Councilman Glenn has been talking with a Lima resident whose brother had been arrested by the sheriff's office for a violation of protection order back in 2017. The family says the man had been injured during the arrest and eventually ended up in Columbus for treatment. He was 70 years old at the time of the arrest. Glenn is asking the sheriff's office to re-think about their decision on body cameras, as the whole story is unclear without them.
