A resident came up with the idea to create a monument for the citizen-soldiers who were based in St. Marys. City administrators liked the idea, and they decided to build one in Memorial Park facing the old armory that the guardsmen used. The history of the St. Marys National Guard unit goes back to 1877 when they were formed.

The State Road Bridge was built in 1948 and has become in disrepair in recent years and will be replaced with construction slated for June and completion in October. There are federal and state dollars in place to do the project with a very minimum local match. The engineer’s estimate was 1.4-million dollars, and the project was awarded to RG Zachrich Construction Inc. for just under 1.2 million dollars. Commissioners say it’s important to get this project completed.

Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith starting to make good on some of her campaign promises as she has one month under her belt, and she looks to hit the streets in the coming days, literally. “Walking the Wards” is a new initiative where she and her staff are taking the mayor’s office out to where the people are. They will be boots on the ground in Lima neighborhoods. Smith hopes to make those connections with the community in a casual setting rather than at council or in her office.

Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries issued a statement saying that the 12 remaining hostages "are free!" The missionaries were kidnapped by gang members on October 16th. There are five children in the group of 16 U.S. citizens and one Canadian, including an 8-month-old. Senator Rob Portman who has been urging the state department to do more is happy with the news.
