The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be highly visible and cracking down on impaired drivers during the Fourth of July holiday reporting period, which begins at midnight on Thursday, July 3 and will run through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6.
The Allen County Safe Community Coalition held its Summer Partners Meeting Friday morning. The coalition organizes safety programs for children, offers driver’s education for teens, and promotes fire safety as well as the importance of using a designated driver when drinking.

On Friday, Aug. 9 at 8:00 a.m. at the A.C.C.E.S.S. Center – 528 W. Market St., Allen County Probate and Juvenile Court Judge Todd E. Kohlrieser will address the public by discussing the importance of being sober behind the wheel; how alcohol, street drugs, and even prescription drugs can cause impaired driving; the amount it takes for someone to be considered over the limit to operate a vehicle; and the lasting consequences that can come from making poor choices when operating a vehicle under the influence.

The campaign is a state-wide effort to make sure drivers are staying safe on the roads. The state patrol, joined with other local law enforcement, will be having a close eye on the roads from now until September 6th. Their goal is to remove impaired drivers from the road and decrease the likelihood of dangerous crashes. Sergeant Alec Coil of the Lima Post of the Highway Patrol says just in 2020 alone, there have been over 13,000 OVI-related crashes.
The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Campaign will run from Wednesday through Labor Day. State Highway Patrols around the country will focus on removing drivers under the influence from roadways. In 2020 alone, Allen and Putnam counties have seen five OVI related deaths. This is up one from the annual average. Lieutenant Tim Grigsby, Commander of the Lima Ohio State Patrol Post, says troopers will be provided overtime to enforce this campaign.
Local law enforcement and members of the Allen County Students Against Destructive Decisions took to the stage, spreading some awareness on drinking and driving.
