The Lima Family YMCA is hosting its “No School Days” program on Monday, Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Monday, Feb. 16 for Presidents Day.
Elementary students got a chance to enjoy some gooey fun while learning a science lesson ahead of the holiday break.
“Sparty Friends” from across Lima City Schools spent part of the day celebrating fall at Faurot Park.
“An excellent way for us to be able to bring the kids out and partner with the Y and create this safe space for them to be able to learn valuable life skills, and, more definitively, learn how to have some fun in the water in a safe and effective way,” Heggins said.
Jared Lehman, CEO of the Lima Family YMCA, said the program offers more than exercise.
“It provides more than just a gym component and a time for them to get some exercise. It's a valuable life skill. They're learning a skill that they can take with them well beyond Air Force and as they age into adulthood,” Lehman said.
GROB Systems Inc. has launched a program with area schools to introduce concepts of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to elementary students.
Lima Senior basketball players and cheerleaders are helping young students get excited for Read Across America Week.
The K-Kids program, designed for elementary-age students, teaches the importance of making a difference through positive actions. Members have supported organizations such as Samaritan House, Our Daily Bread, the Humane Society, and several others. Current K-Kids members encourage their peers to get involved.

On Monday evening, Temple Christian School unveiled their new elementary building to the public ahead of the upcoming school year. Around 150 people came out to the facility located at 750 Brower Road in Lima. The 32,000 square-foot facility, formerly the Lima Manor, will house grades kindergarten through 5th grade and includes 16 classrooms, a complete kitchen and lunchroom, and additional office space. Over the past 5 years, Temple Christian has observed a 45% increase in the student population to a current enrollment of 360 students. As the elementary students move into the new building, school officials are ready to serve the growing number of students.
