To bring light to the need to improve literacy in our area, the Lima Literacy Council and the Equestrian Therapy program at Fassett Farms are teaming up to present “Reading to a Horse.” Wednesday “Mocha” visited the literacy council to promote a new program that they will be offering to people wanting to improve their reading skills.

The leadership and community development program allows 30 people a year to spend ten months growing their skills and building character. Thursday, the group got the opportunity to spend some of their orientation alongside horses at the Fassett Farm. Inside the barn, they were seen working directly with some of the animals for different team-building activities.

Horse riders-to-be got a look into what it means to be responsible horseman at Fassett Farm. The camp is being put on by the Equestrian Therapy Program, inviting campers between the ages of 8 and 12 to learn more about feeding and grooming the horses, as well as a few basic riding skills to get them started.

Special needs students from Unity Elementary in Lima have been spending time on the saddle at Fassett Farm. For the past few weeks, the students have been visiting the Equestrian Therapy Program, learning how to ride the horses, seeing how the animals are taken care of, and some of the different commands while riding the horse.

The Lima Rotary Club heard from staff of the Equestrian Therapy Program about the work that they are doing at Fassett Farm. The Rotary Club learned more about how the program uses horses for therapy for disabled people in an 11 county area, as well as inviting local groups for team building activities.

When it gets this cold outside, many people's first thought is keeping themselves warm - but at Fassett Farm, their first priority is keeping the horses safe from the cold temperatures outside.
