The USDA announces 1 billion dollars to help with food insecurity across the country. That money will be divided up nationwide and used to support places like the West Ohio Food Bank as they wait for the federal government to pass the farm bill to continue their funding. Half of the money will go to programs that work with farmers, growers, and producers for nutritional food options... The other half of the money will be used for additional food purchases by food banks from retailers and food manufacturers, which have been in decline.
You only have one more chance to experience the Lima Farmers Market this year. Saturday will be the final farmers market of the season. Besides several vendors selling baked goods and produce, there will be pumpkin painting and a fall photo booth. EBT and SNAP are also accepted at the farmer's market for people to take home some produce. If you would like to go, it runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Cable Road side of the UNOH campus.

More money, we just need more money. That was the message to United States Congressman Jim Jordan at the West Ohio Food Bank on Monday. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an essential component to meet the nutritional and food security needs of children, and the Lima City Schools are helping to meet those needs this summer. The school, in partnership with the Children's Hunger Alliance, is passing out produce boxes to families that have signed up for the service. Each Thursday, during the school's free Summer Lunch Program, a box of fresh fruits and vegetables makes its way home with the families.
The University of Northwestern Ohio will be the home of the weekly farmers market during the 2024 season.
Many families rely on free or reduced meals to feed their children during the school year and during the summer it can become difficult to provide those. That's where the Lima City Schools can still assist families. They provide a free summer lunch program to children from one to 18 years of age and they don't even have to attend Lima City Schools. There are eat-in sites and mobile sites with the Spartan Lunch Express. The program is subsidized by the United States Department of Agriculture and offers a variety of options to make sure students get a balanced meal. There is a new service for the family added at Heritage Elementary on Thursdays this year to promote healthy choices.
