LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Fresh fruit and vegetables are an essential component to meet the nutritional and food security needs of children, and the Lima City Schools are helping to meet those needs this summer.
The school, in partnership with the Children's Hunger Alliance, is passing out produce boxes to families that have signed up for the service. Each Thursday, during the school's free Summer Lunch Program, a box of fresh fruits and vegetables makes its way home with the families.
"It's fantastic. So, I have five children, and it's definitely going to help us out a lot. With summer and not being in school, the cost of food now and the kids in general," said Courtney Serna, who received a fresh produce box.
"We're giving away fresh fruits and vegetables to help the kids get different tastes of things. So they can come eat lunch and get Domino's Pizza and then get a box they signed up for," explained Mindy Cole, Heritage cafeteria manager.
It has been so successful that there is currently a waiting list for the produce boxes. Organizers say they could pass out additional boxes if more donations came in through the Children's Hunger Alliance. You can find out more on their website at https://childrenshungeralliance.org/.
