LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Farmers Market kicked off a new year with a new location on a new day. The weekly farmers moved from Tuesday afternoons to Saturday mornings on the campus of the University of Northwestern Ohio. There were around 15 vendors selling produce, baked goods, and other homemade items. Besides the vendors, throughout the summer, there will be some additional activities to help showcase the community.
“So, to really kick off this farmers market this week, we started with a food truck rally. Moving forward, we are going to be having some community events to really bring in some unique aspects of our community and our UNOH school here as well. So, be checking our Facebook for those special events each week to pair up with the market,” says Madelyn Downing.
The farmers market is also helping to eliminate the lack of access to fresh produce that some people have.
“We are also working with a company called Produce Perks this year. So, along with our farmers market, we are accepting EBT as a payment. We will hand out some SNAP tokens, which will be equal to the EBT money, to match that. A Produce Perks Company out of Cincinnati will match that amount up to $30. So, we are not only able to provide the community with these local vendors but also have some incentives to help them get some of that extra produce,” adds Downing.
The Lima Farmers Market will be every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the UNOH campus in the 1300 block of Cable Road in Lima.
