LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — In Lima, Sixth Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is working to keep his “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program afloat.
The program assists elderly and disabled residents who can’t afford critical home repairs, including roofing, windows, furnace issues and steps. Glenn said material costs have risen so sharply that the program’s budget can’t keep up. He said many of the residents calling him live on about $900 a month and often have to choose between medication, food and safety in their own homes.
The program serves residents across Lima and even receives calls from surrounding communities. Glenn said every small donation helps keep people safe and in their homes.
“You can volunteer your time, but if you can donate, we’re not asking for much money. If you donate at 20 or 10, you put smiles on these people faces, because they want to stay in their homes. They don't want to leave their home. You know, they've been there so many years, and I don't want them leaving their home. I'm gonna work hard and try to make sure that they stay in their home, that they have a good Christmas,” Glenn said.
If you’d like to support the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program, you can contribute to the project fund at the Lima Community Foundation, account No. 57, 101 N. Elizabeth St. All donations will be used to purchase materials needed to make repairs for elderly and disabled residents living in the Sixth Ward. Donations are tax-deductible.
You can also donate extra building materials — Glenn is looking for storm doors, windows, ramps and furnaces — or volunteer your time to assist with repairs. To help, call Glenn at 419-905-9572.
