When Landen Philpot passed away at less than three months of age from SIDS, his family would have no idea how his short time on Earth would help to provide education and scholarship opportunities for so many in the community. The SIDS Awareness 5K was started to honor Landen, whose father was an employee of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital at the time of Landen’s passing. Employees wanted a way to honor Landen and provide valuable education about SIDS to the community.
September 5, 2024, Press Release from the Office of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine: (COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today delivered welcoming remarks for Ohio’s 2024 Kids Summit. Hosted for the first time by the new Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY), in collaboration with the Ohio Supreme Court, the Kids Summit brought together county leaders from across the state representing children services, the judicial system, law enforcement, parent and family advocates, social workers, and more to learn about DCY: the new agency created last year by Governor DeWine to streamline systems that support children and families. Over 800 people who serve children and families in various capacities attended the one-day summit.
On Wednesday, October 26th, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center, in collaboration with Safe Haven Baby Boxes, will be unveiling Ohio’s eighth Safe Haven Baby Box. The Safe Haven Baby Box is a secure place for an infant to be surrendered and is embedded within the Southwest corner of the St. Rita’s emergency department facing Market Street. It features climate control technology as well as a silent alarm that notifies first responders of a surrender, allowing hospital personnel to respond within five minutes to perform a medical evaluation.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 3,500 infants die from sleep-related deaths in the United States every year. The updated guidelines include quite a few changes, including not using car seats, strollers, swings, and infant carriers, for routine sleep. In addition, they should avoid the use of commercial devices that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS, or other sleep-related deaths.
The Delphos Police Department is looking into the death of another infant. Officers were called out to the 400 block of West Second Street just after 7 a.m. Wednesday to the report of an unresponsive child. The infant was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead in the emergency room. The child's body was taken to the Lucas County Coroner's office for an autopsy. No other details are being released at this time.
The investigation continues into the death of an infant in Van Wert last week.
