The wrong decision behind the wheel can alter your life — and the lives of others — forever. That was the lesson students at Temple Christian School learned Monday during the Save a Life Tour.
December 13, 2024, Press Release from the Lima-Allen County Regional Planning Commission: LIMA—The Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition met this morning at Mercy Health to honor its coalition members, announce the recent FY25 grant award of $46,200 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and discuss the importance of driving sober this winter. Twenty coalition members attended the biannual breakfast where safety advocates come together to recap safe driving campaigns, like Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Megan Kinnear, chairperson for Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition, said the grant became effective Oct. 1, 2024 and runs through Sept. 30, 2025.
The Safe Community organization likes to recognize people in our community who have made significant contributions to keeping people safe. The categories include the outstanding service award, children safety award, traffic safety award, and lifetime achievement award. Evelyn Smith was one of the people to receive the lifetime award for her nearly 30 years of work in the Lima Allen County Safe Community.
Allen County saw less fatal crashes in 2019 than in 2018 According to the Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition, there were seven fatal crashes that resulted in the deaths of nine people. In 2018, there were 9 crashes that caused the deaths of 12 people. Their report says that only two of the crashes were the result of alcohol or drug use and two of the crashes involved motorcyclist who were not using a helmet. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration each traffic fatality has a comprehensive cost of nearly 6 million dollars.
Fatal crashes in Allen County dropped in 2018, this according to the Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition. Allen County rounded out the year with no car accident fatalities in the month of December. The year as a whole saw nine crashes that resulted in a total of twelve fatalities. The number of crashes is down from 2017, which saw 11 fatal crashes.
As homecoming season approaches, the Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition wants to remind teen drivers of the dangers of distracted driving.
