“But just being there and providing that listening. Erin, I think that's something that's very important for young people, is that we have that adult who is listening to them and not just directing them where to go, but also listening to their dreams and their hopes and their goals,” said Dr. Portia Smith, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Northwestern Ohio.
Some Lima students on Friday got the chance to enjoy some seasonal fall activities while also making new friends! The Sparty Friends gathered this morning inside West Middle School to decorate pumpkins while enjoying popcorn and apple cider. The "Bigs from West Middle School were paired with a Little from Freedom, Heritage, Independence, or Unity Elementary schools to complete these activities together while strengthening peer relationships skills.
Working to build future leaders in the goal of a new initiative of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Future Leaders Initiative will consist of three programs to encourage littles to make positive choices while developing attainable goals for their future. The scholar program will address the importance of school. The volunteer program will work to get them involved in supporting local organizations and giving back. The transitional program is for youth 16 and older to prepare them for graduation and life after high school.
Ahead of their graduation, Lima Senior's DECA students put on their caps and gowns to walk through the halls of Unity Elementary one last time. The high school students spent the year visiting with their littles at Unity to provide help with classes, life advice, and emotional support. The annual tradition is the school's way of showing appreciation and support for their bigs as they move forward in life and showing littles what they are working towards too.
