For nearly two decades, a local family has spent Christmas Eve giving back to the community.
Shawnee High School students and staff spent the past several weeks collecting food and hygiene items for local families in need.
Tri Star Career Compact topped its own record this afternoon during its annual “Pack the Pallet” food drive.
“How can we be better united without being able to help one another feed each other, especially those who are in great need during the Christmas season or all year round. I mean, with the situation that's happening within our country and all the SNAP benefits being cut or turned down, et cetera, there are going to be more and more people who are in need of ways to feed their family,” said Mary Blanche Hengstler of Com_Unity Ministries.
It’s that time of year when you start to hear the familiar jingle outside of stores.
The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. and is open to children ages 4 to 13. Registration is required. The cost is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

One of the most powerful and heartwarming traditions of the Mercer County Fair returns on Wednesday, August 13 at 9:00 PM in the Beer Garden: the Bear Hollow Wood Carvers Auction.
Organizers are currently in need of donations, especially children’s clothing. Items can be dropped off at the Children Services office at 123 West Spring Street on the following dates and times:
Friday, July 25, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Monday, July 28, and Tuesday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Large furniture and appliances **will not** be accepted.
