A Mercer County girl scout was bestowed a rare honor Monday night following her heroic actions in the Summer of 2023. Troop 2037 Girl Scout, Abigail Kunkler of St. Henry, was awarded the Medal of Honor after she saved the life of a young boy. In August of 2023, Abigail was at a pond for a swim party when she noticed a little boy struggling to stay afloat and submerged under the water. Without a life jacket, Abigail leaped off the dock into the water and saved the boy from drowning. After receiving her medal, we talked with Abigail about what she remembers from that day and the overall meaning of this rare honor.

The Allen County Museum and Historical Society wants to invite the public to view a new display that honors one of their already existing exhibits. On this day ten years ago, the Roll of Valor exhibit was unveiled at the Allen County Museum. On Friday, it was rededicated to all that have received Medals of Honor in our country, especially the two from Lima. William E. Metzger Jr. and Leonard F. Mason both lost their lives fighting in World War II and received their medals posthumously. April 16th was declared "Mason-Metzger Roll of Valor Day" by Mayor David Berger in his proclamation. While this dedication is meant to remind the public of the decade old exhibit, there are a few new pieces added to commemorate it.

A local Boy Scout inspires a community to make sure that a hero has a fitting memorial at the reservoir that bears his name, and that his actions are never forgotten.

“It’s pretty clear in Allen County Ohio, the name William E. Metzger, Jr. will never be forgotten,” says Larry Huffman

On the 75th anniversary of his death, a new memorial was dedicated to the heroism of Medal of Honor recipient 2nd Lt. William Metzger, thanks to Jon Frueh, Jr.  Frueh was looking for a project that he could do for his eagle badge and when he saw Metzger’s formal memorial in disarray, he knew “This is what I wanted to do. It would be really cool to redesign this memorial for Metzger,” exclaimed Frueh.

Family, friends, and fellow veterans joined together to honor the memory of Leonard F. Mason, who was killed in action in Guam during World War 2.
